Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox | 16 Apr 12
James Shields, 8.1 IP, W, 0 ER, 5K
There’s not too much to say about this one. It was 11:05 am start - Patriot’s Day in Boston and the running of the Boston Marathon.
Shields was dominant. The Sox couldn’t get anything going against him, collecting only four hits. They had a runner on third in the 2nd and a runner on second in the 9th, but that was as close as they got.
The Rays didn’t fare much better against Bard, at least until the 7th, and they can’t even claim credit for that. Bard imploded after getting the first two outs of the inning, issuing a walk, giving up a single, and then two more walks to walk in the winning run. Why Bobby Valentine didn’t pull him, who knows? The bullpen was warmed up and ready to go.
Mike Sweeney made a great catch in the 2nd, the Rays got a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play in the 7th. And that was about it. I was really hoping for a Red Sox walkoff in the 9th to give me three straight, but it just didn’t happen.
